El 2016, Prem Sahib va documentar l’interior d’una sèrie de locals gai de Londres que havien tancat recentment, o s’enfrontaven llavors a amenaces imminents de tancament degut a la ràpida reurbanització de la ciutat impulsada pel mercat. Aquest treball es compon d’imatges preses en dues saunes gais: Chariots Shoreditch i Chariots Waterloo. Les imatges van ser preses per Sahib i el fotògraf Mark Blower mentre els espais estaven sent ocupats o es preparaven per a la seva urbanització i demolició. Les imatges reflexionen sobre la desaparició, transformació i estètica d’un espai social en el qual el sexe, significativament, formava part del disseny. El títol fa referència a aquest doble significat, al·ludint tant a la repetició mundana com a una versió alternativa dels esdeveniments – un procés transformador que es produeix a través del flux constant d’espurnes hipnòtiques.

Este trabajo se compone de imágenes tomadas en dos saunas gays: Chariots Shoreditch y Chariots Waterloo. Las imágenes fueron tomadas por Sahib y el fotógrafo Mark Blower mientras los espacios estaban siendo ocupados o se preparaban para su urbanización y demolición. Las imágenes reflexionan sobre la desaparición, transformación y estética de un espacio social en el que el sexo, significativamente, formaba parte del diseño. El título hace referencia a este doble significado, aludiendo tanto a la repetición mundana como a una versión alternativa de los acontecimientos – un proceso transformador que se produce a través del flujo constante de chispas hipnóticas.

In 2016, Prem Sahib documented the interior of a number of gay venues in London that had recently closed, or were then facing imminent threats of closure due to the rapid market-led redevelopment of the city. This work is comprised of images taken in two gay saunas: Chariots Shoreditch & Chariots Waterloo. The images were taken by Sahib and photographer Mark Blower while the spaces were being squatted, or were in the process of being prepared for development and demolishment. The images reflect on the disappearance, transformation and aesthetics of a social space in which sex, significantly, was part of the design. The title refers to this double meaning, alluding to both mundane repetition and an alternative version of events – a transformative process that occurs through the constant flow of hypnotic sparks.

Es va llicenciar en Belles arts per la Slade School of Art de Londres el 2006, va obtenir un màster en Cultura Material i Visual per l’University College de Londres el 2008 i un diploma de postgrau en Belles arts per la Royal Academy de Londres el 2013.

Sahib utilitza objectes, instal·lacions i performances per explorar temes com la intimitat i el desig homosexual. L’obra de l’artista utilitza un llenguatge de minimalisme formal, sovint extraient detalls de l’arquitectura i els espais que les comunitats gais utilitzen per a reunir-se, i tornant-los a presentar en instal·lacions escasses però potents. Prem Sahib is a British artist of Indian and Polish descent who was born in London. The artist earned a BFA from the Slade School of Art, London in 2006, an MA in Material and Visual Culture from University College London in 2008, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from the Royal Academy, London in 2013.

Sahib uses objects, installations, and performance to explore themes of queer intimacy and desire. The artist’s work utilises a language of formal minimalism, often extracting details from the architecture and spaces that gay communities use to meet, and re-presenting them in sparse yet potent installations. He evokes the sweaty ecstasy of gay nightclubs through minimalist sculptural language.

Milovan Farronato (curator) 

Milovan Farronato is an independent curator and art critic. He curated the Italian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. He directed the Fiorucci Art Trust until its extinction in 2021. He developed the itinerant residency project Roadside Picnic and, from 2011 until 2019, the annual Volcano Extravaganza festival, born in Stromboli and then migrated first to Naples in 2017 and then to Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2018. With Paulina Olowska he gave life to the Mycorial Theater symposium held in 2014 in Rabka, Poland, and in 2016 in São Paulo, Brazil. He collaborated with Serpentine Galleries for the Magazine Sessions (2016). Farronato conceived The violent No!, part of the public program of the 14th Istanbul Biennale in 2015. From 2005 to 2012 Farronato was director of the non-profit organisation Viafarini and curator at the DOCVA Documentation Center for Visual Arts in Milan. From 2006 to 2010 he was Associate Curator of the Civic Gallery of Modena and, from 2008 to 2015, professor of Visual Culture at the IUAV University claDEM. Among the curated exhibitions: Nightfall, with Fernanda Brenner and Erika Verzutti, Mendes Wood DM, Bruxelles (2018); Nick Mauss, Illuminated Window, La Triennale and Torre Velasca, Milan (2017); Lucy McKenzie’s first solo show in Italy, La Kermesse Héroïque, Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, Venice (2017); the solo exhibition of Peter Doig, for the same institution in Venice (2015); and Arimortis, Museo del Novecento, Milan (2013), co-curated with Roberto Cuoghi. Milovan Farronato was a member of the curatorial team of the IV Dhaka Art Summit and part of the Development Committee of the Chisenhale Gallery in London. He is part of the advisory board for Turkish Pavilion in Venice 2022 and 2024. He founded with Andrea Bellini the Archivio of Chiara Fumai, Milan.
